‘In Conversations with Artists’: Marta Mouka-Fibre Artist
The Tweed & Area Arts Council (T&AAC) is pleased to announce the sixth artist in the series ‘In Conversation with Artists’. Every three months the work of a featured artist is displayed in various venues throughout Tweed. The artist and venues are announced on the T&AAC website, social media (Facebook and Instagram) and in The Tweed News. At each venue a poster with a QR code will take the viewer to the T&AAC website where you can find a short story (like this one!) and link to a video of the artist in conversation about their work and inspiration on T&AAC’s YouTube channel.
Our featured artist for October – December, 2025 is fibre artist artist Marta Mouka. A selection of Marta’s work will be on display at the Tweed Public Library, Quinn’s of Tweed Fine Art Gallery and in the atrium of the Marble Arts Centre.
Artist Statement:
“The organic evidence captured on silk documents the beauty, mystery, and healing properties of plant material. My work relates to Canadian nature in a very physical and literal way.”
Bio:
Marta Mouka is a textile artist who creates collages using a unique approach to needle felting. She works with woven silk, often eco-printed with plant material, to make finished textiles with a smooth texture and soft-focus colour transitions. She experiments with centuries-old techniques of dyeing with natural dyes and combines them with the more contemporary method of botanical printing. She also creates eco-printed silk scarves. Marta has planted trees and flowers on her property to use in her work.
Marta has been creating art for over 30 years. Since 2008 she has been a full-time textile artist, living and working in Tweed, Ontario. She has held solo shows and participated in juried group exhibitions, and she has received a number of awards. Her art is held in private collections across Canada.
